The Bad Fanfiction Panel is returning for it's 3rd year and we have enough horrifically bad fanfiction action to extend out panel to 2 hours.

From the Goffic tales of Enbony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way to the seemingly innocent tale of Clowd mowing his front lawn we will be going over what makes a fanfiction bad, why we have learned to both love and hate them, how to spot the difference between a fanfiction that was written badly just to troll the readers or as a serious effort.


We will be reciting some passages from select bad fanfics, some with some less than child friendly references, so for that the panel must be 16+

...please tell me there will be a reading of My Immortal. It's vital to anything that mentions bad fanfiction.

We have a hard copy of My Immortal, and it shall be one of the highlights of the panel.

This will be our 4th year running.

We're gonna be changing some our material, but we're not certain if we should keep it a 2-hour panel or bring it back down to 1.

2 hours isn't enough time to go over all the badfic in the world!

Are you going to mention asian pop fanfiction this year? 75% of what you find could qualify as badfic =.= Or just really bad self-inserts.

Baw. How about a panel where we just bash Twilight, like we did last time? :V

I'd be up for an anti-Twilight panel - an hour of just discussing the great number of things which makes the book/movie series fail on an epic level.

We will be doing it for two hours again, assuming the app I sent in a few days ago gets approved. We'll be the same line-up as last year, though potentially with a fourth person. We're not sure yet.

Haven't yet harvested for the readings, but we'll see. The biggest issue is always knowledge, and none of the panelists are in bandom, so we won't have too much reference to work with there.

Oh God yes that would be wonderful. If this happens I'd want in. Hard not to derail the badfic panel as it is just to rail on Twilight.

I'd be up for bad fanfiction reading, too, but at these things, I always find there's too much emphasis on squicks and fetishes the readers/audience dislike and not enough on just plain bad writing.

Aye. I try to split the readings so that there isn't too much emphasis on bad porn and where there is, it's merely poorly-written instead of just 'this isn't my fetish'. Too easy to fall into the trap of calling something bad just for kinks, which if anyone in the audience shares, is going akin to just sitting there and bashing their fandom for the series itself, which I also want to avoid. Except where Homestuck is involved.

legolas by laurs is a definite option, and FaCe ThE StRaNgE is good way to escalate from My Immortal, which has been a staple for every year so far, but at the same time FTS is really obvious trollfic. Some trollfic is fun to read, but it's the legitimate bad stuff where we can really show where it went wrong and to not go there.

I imagine there's probably plenty of Homestuck and Hetalia fanfiction these days that is ripe for this panel, too.

Oh, so much. We'll definitely see some Homestuck since once of the hosts is in the fandom and has plenty of horror stories, while Hetalia's presence really depends on the options I have. Even with two hours, there's generally enough talk that it's good not to bog it down with about twenty readings.

I also "highly recommend" 50 Shades of Grey to this panel.

If anyone doesn't know, it is a published book series which was originally a bad Twilight smutfic. It's full of awful writing. It's even worse than the book series it was based off of!

Maybe. None of us have read it yet, though it'll definitely get a mention. I and another co-panelist both have some rather strong thoughts on the whole thing.

Also, assuming there are no other people going by Shance on here, then neat, I'm also on the MLP panel with you.

Bad Fanfiction 3: The Quickening will be Friday, 9-11 PM, in Panel 6. We'll be the exact same group as last year, back even more writer!mad than before and talking about bad fanfiction, fandoms, and all of the new ones that have sprung up in the past year and brought their own sorts of horrible to the table. It's an open discussion peppered with readings and people sharing their own fandom and badfic experiences, aiming to cater to both new and experienced writers looking to avoid the usual pratfalls of fanfic, and for those with bile fascination for whom the phrase "Paul McCartney mpreg" is something they need to click on. In the wake of 50 Shades of Grey's popularity and a film adaptation of Mortal Instruments set for next year, we will also discuss fanfic writers breaking into original writing simply by filing off the canon names and passing it off as their own. And, plenty of snark to go around.

Also, this year we'll be looking for volunteers from the crowd to do some of the readings.

Discussion topics will include:
-The different ways that fanfiction can end up being 'badfic' and how to avoid them
-Tips for beginners on how and where to get started
-Is fandom as a whole a bunch of enabling, tasteless fuckwits who perpetuate bad writing?
-Is there a distinction between self-inserts and Mary Sues?
-Common mistakes that writers tend to make that can be easily avoided
-Fanfic writers going "original"
-And more
