I would like to know how do you select the 30 teams (if it's like in the states) that would participate to the selection of the canadian team? is it first coming first save, a selection CV based on experience and past awards or something else? if it's based on CV would the document that we have to fill would be available shortly? Also do you know when the selected team would be choosed so they can prepare? Thank you very much :D

:roll:

I too would like to know how the competition will work.
Will it be a seperate thing from the Masquerade, or will the winners simply be chosen from the Masquerade entrants?

I would also like to know how the signup for the Masquerade (or the competition if it's a seperate event) will work.
I'm going all-out on my cosplays this year, and would be really heartbroken if I were to miss out on the WCS.

I can say that the masquerade and WCS are two completely different things.

Thank you for your questions.

The official rules for the commission will be posted soon. Because the WCS is part of a bigger international competition our rules needed to be reviewed by both Otakuthon and the WCS organization in Japan. In addition the rules need to be posted in both English and in French and the otakuthon staff are hard at work translating them. In the meantime, we will do our best to answer your questions posted here or emailed to wcs@otakuthon.com.

Please bear in mind that the WCS is not the standard costume competition that many Canadian cosplayers are familiar with so the registration process and rules are different. If you do not agree with this style of competition, you are welcome to compete in the more traditional masquerade on Saturday night.

This competition is NOT replacing the Saturday night Masquerade. You are free to enter whichever competition you wish, WCS (only pairs may enter!), the Saturday masquerade (single, pair or group entries) or both.

Please note that the event directors are are not French-speaking so there will be a small delay in replying to questions asked in French.

In regards to the question about the resume, the US process will be very similar so you can use their resume to get an idea of what we could be asking for.

Thank you for your patience!

~~~~~
Merci pour vos questions.
Les règles du concours seront bientôt disponibles, mais n'oubliez pas que le concours WCS ne remplace pas le mascarade d'Otakuthon!
Le concours WCS fait partie d'une compétition internationale plus large, donc nos règles doivent être vérifiés par Otakuthon et aussi par le WCS au Japon. De plus, les règles doivent être affichés en anglais et aussi en français. Le personnel d'Otakuthon travaille très fort à les traduire assez vite que possible. En attendant les règles officiels, nous faisons nos mieux pour répondre à vos questions dans ce forum ou envoyés à wcs@otakuthon.com.
Veuillez garder à l'esprit que le WCS n'est pas un type de "mascarade standard" que vous connaissez. Le processus d'inscription et les règles sont très différents. Si vous n'êtes pas d'accord avec ce genre de concours, nous vous en prions de vous concourir au mascarade de samedi soir.
Nous invitons les cosplayers à s'inscrire au concours qu'ils préfèrent, soit le WCS (en duo seulement!), le mascarade de samedi soir ou les deux.
Veuillez noter que les responsables (les directeurs) ne parlent pas le français, donc les réponses aux questions posés en français seront un peu retardées.
À propos du CV, ça va être très similaire au processus de WCS américain alors on peut regarder leurs CV pour vous familiariser.
I would like to know what are the selection criteria, what are you looking for into the resume? How are you going to pic up the cosplayer that would do the competition?
Re: WCS Selection Process
Essentially our selection process is first-come, first-served. We have thirty slots that we will fill as properly filled out applications that meet the costume guidelines come in. This process may take a little while as we need to have French-language applications translated, so we appreciate your patience.
The important thing to note is the WCS competition is different from a Canadian-style Masquerade. It does not follow ICG guidelines nor have divisions. It is an international competition governed by its own organizing committee. It is not really intended for first time cosplayers. This is why we ask for a team portfolio including descriptions and photos of previous costumes. The portfolio is your way to show us not only that you have the experience and skill, but also that you have passion and would be a good ambassador for Canada.
The WCS competition is not a beauty contest, but a cosplay contest -- the construction of the costume and how it looks on you, combined with your presentation on stage, is what matters. Rest assured, the photos will not be used to discriminate applicants based on body type in any way. They may, however, be used in the future for promotional materials. This is why it is essential you have the rights to use the photos, or can prove express permission of the photographers. If you do not have permission to allow us use of the photos in this way, then indicate that you do not. It will not negatively affect your application - we just don't want to have copyright issues with photographers as we know how hard they work and want to ensure they are recognized.
Someone out there shared this with us, and it's a pretty good overview of the differences between WCS and the ICG Guidelines based style of Masquerade familiar to many in Ontario & Quebec.
The resume application can be found here. It mostly asks about experience, as this competition is not intended for first-time cosplayers. Both entrants must be able to meet the 4-costume requirement. If the application is complete and there are still spots left, the group is in.
The World Cosplay Summit is not affiliated with the ICG and does not use ICG Guidelines or divisions.
This year we have 3 judges, all familiar with Otakuthon and the community. They all speak some level of French, and 2 are fully bilingual. However, time is not spent with an individual judge like workmanship judging at the masquerade. Judging is done by the whole panel and time is limited, so the entries who cannot communicate in English may lose some time to translation.
There will be some level of workmanship judging prior to the event, so your friend would have to arrive early. If her group is not there (as she cannot participate as a solo entry), they will miss this portion of judging and would be disqualified.
There is also a highly recommended rehearsal Friday afternoon at 12:30pm to allow entrants time to get used to the stage.
Just a reminder, the registration period for the 2014 WCS Canada Competition ends this weekend. There are still spots remaining so get your applications in before it's too late!
(A very late post as other organizational and real life stuff slowed us down, so sincere apologies. We'd wanted to include pictures in this but that'll delay it even more and can update that later.)
In alphabetical order, the teams competing at World Cosplay Summit 2015 Canada are:
104th Squad - Gaius & Yuki
Akemidoko - Torahime & Momohime
D18 - xneverconformx & Dera
Detailed Mess - Detailed Illusion Cosplay & Miss Messy Mia
Jelly Angels - Vickybunnyangel & Jelly Cosplay
Jellyfish - Kuranosuke & Tsukimi
Les Petites Licornes Bleues a la Peau Douce - Licorne Adacieuse & Licorne Prevoyante
Polar Diamonds - MeltingMirror Cosplay & Calamity Cosplay
The Princess and The Lady - Tsukihime & Crimson Witch
Veegee's Workshops - Silmeria & Lenneth
We've had two teams withdraw, so as of today these are the remaining teams.
Best of luck to everyone!
Come cheer on your favourites this Friday, Aug 22, at 8pm!
We are pleased to announce our 2015 Team Canada: Detailed Mess (Detailed-Illusions Cosplay and Miss Messy Mia)
Image
Our runners up, who will go to Japan if anything happens to Team Canada, are Calamity Cosplay and MeltingMirror Cosplay, of Polar Diamonds.
Image
We'd like to thank everyone who helped make the show a success, from the teams that entered and showed off their stuff on stage, to our dedicated ninjas and staffers in the greenroom and the sound and lighting crews. We'd also like to thank our judges, representing Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto, as well as cosplay guest Kaname and the Consul-General of Japan at Montreal. We couldn't have done it without any of you, and we appreciate your hard work.
